There are three traits that are common to good leaders everywhere.

1. AMBITION: By this I do not just mean selfish ambition - this is not going to get you very far - I mean ambition for the organisation and for those working towards the organisation's goals.

2. PASSION: There has to be passion for results, for getting things done and for the company's achievement. Leaders must be able to transmit this passion to other people wich is why it is difficult to imagine a "wimp" even with the greatest ideas, sitting in the CEO's seat. Jack Welch and Jeff Immelt*, as I say, are very different people but thay are both extremely passionate. The love what they do and this is vital.

3.VISION: Here I am talking forming a vision rather than necessarily creating a vision. Forming a vision to my mind means being able to take pieces from other people whom you are working with and shaping it into a whole. Leaders have to be able to abstract the key elements and articulate them.

A final word on ethics. I believe it is crucial that leaders should act with a high level of personal integrity. It is hard in a company with more than 300,000 people to ensure that everyone follows suit and the biggest concern is that a handful of people get together to act dishonestly. If something is discovered, to create a culture where integrity is the foundation of all that you do.
